World Boxing has a new president: Gennady Golovkin takes over and wants to stabilize Olympic boxing – with a clear vision for LA 2028.

Olympic boxing has a new strong man: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will be at the helm of World Boxing in the future. The former middleweight champion was elected president unopposed at the annual congress in Rome on Sunday – a clear vote of confidence in one of the most influential figures of the past boxing era.
His election is linked to a clear mission! World Boxing is to stabilize and secure Olympic boxing in the long term, particularly with a view to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and beyond. Immediately after his appointment, Golovkin announced that he would consistently continue on the path of realignment. “This is a new beginning. Together, we will win back the trust of the world,” explained the 43-year-old.
Golovkin succeeds founding president Boris van der Vorst, who did not stand for re-election after two years. Under his leadership, World Boxing received the decisive recognition from the IOC for LA 2028 in the summer. At the same time, the federation’s first world championships were overshadowed by discussions about hastily introduced gender tests. An omnipresent topic that Golovkin must now moderate and sort out as his first official act.
